A brief narrative of the ravages of the British and Hessians at Princeton : manuscript / [by Robert Lawrence] ca. 1776-1777.

Consists of an undated manuscript by Robert Lawrence, which was often mistakenly called THE THOMAS OLDEN DIARY and attributed to Olden. It is a narrative of the ravages and atrocities committed by the Hessians and the British in and around Princeton, NJ; with short accounts of the battles of Trenton and Princeton. The narrative is set between January 3, 1777 and April 18, 1777, the date when the last paragraph was written. Lawrence states that the fighting "was plain within sight of our door at about 400 yards distance."

Robert Lawrence was the son of William Lawrence of Middletown Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Robert Lawrence had for many years represented Monmouth County in the N.J. Assembly, and was Speaker of the House as late as 1758. He was a lawyer and he speaks of the law often in his narrative. A family connection existed between Thomas Olden and Lawrence, and Lawrence was living in the David Olden house, in Princeton, N.J., a fact which may have caused the confusion as to the authorship of the...
